CSC Member V. Rahbar Receives Frederick Luis Aldama Emerging BIPOC Comics Studies Leadership Award & Strategic Equity & Anti-Racism (StEAR) Enhancement Funding!

Comics Studies Cluster member and iSchool PhD student V Rahbar (she/they) was featured in an iSchool news item congratulating her on various awards and recognitions they’ve received over this academic year, including the 2024 Frederick Luis Aldama Emerging BIPOC Comics Studies Leadership Award.

Portrait of V Rahbar by XO Smalls. It is in a grayscale illustrated style. Rahbar has long, dark hair, thick-framed glasses, and dangly earrings.

The article also mentions her upcoming project, “Understanding Through Comics: A Comics and Comics Studies Journal Club”, which received funding from the Strategic Equity & Anti-Racism (StEAR) Enhancement Fund. The project is a year-long series inviting faculty, staff, and students to learn about antiracism and equity through comics.

The article quotes the following comment from Rahbar about the project:

“At the iSchool, I endeavor to connect students with social-justice-oriented comics through my research, service, and teaching activities. I am especially thankful for the support received for ‘Understanding Through Comics: A Comics and Comics Studies Journal Club.’ This project will take the form of a year-long meeting series around antiracism and equity-focused graphic narratives — providing a dedicated space both on-campus and virtually for reading comics as agents of social change and as a form of literature that can improve the academic lives of students as well as their own understanding of our world.”

The series will begin September 2025. In the meantime, learn more about Rahbar’s research or read the original article.
