Community Fellow

Torien Cafferata (they/he) is an AuDHD interdisciplinary artist originally from Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 territory where they earned their BFA in Drama and trained as a performer, playwright, director, dramaturge, and educator. As co-Artistic Director of It’s Not A Box Theatre they have toured immersive performance and installation work to the Prague Quadrennial, SummerWorks, and across Fringe Festivals. Torien’s research spans a host of forms: devised creation methodology, social practice, site-specific, mixed-reality, game design, critical ludology, cultural theory, and clown. He is an avid trifler with digital platforms and aesthetics, often using them in explorations of mad studies, interactivity and interpassivity, non-places and hauntology. For his MFA at Simon Fraser University, Torien experimented with lo-fi human-avataring to examine mad labour and play. Most recently he has been teaching youth in playground and tabletop game design at Brainiacs Adventures, and working with Z-space to facilitate interdisciplinary games and ludology research clusters in so-called Vancouver.
