Graduate Fellow

Siyun Pan is a PhD student in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her research explores popular culture, fandom, and media in contemporary China, with a particular focus on fan productions and the urban mediascape. She examines both the digital labor of celebrity fandom across platforms and their material interventions in city space. Centering on Chongqing and the fandom of Times Fengjun, her work traces how diverse fan creations—from fanfiction, art, and video to big-screen advertisements, graffiti, and installation art—collectively and affectively reshape the urban landscape. She also investigates the creativity of fan production in emerging forms such as interactive literature (RPG games on Orange Light), plush dolls, and mini NFC records.
