Maibell Ong is a recent English MA graduate who specializes in cognitive linguistics and game studies. Her master’s thesis, “Video game story-playing: emergent story versus emergent experience,” revolved around how meaning emerges in video games where there is a participatory player within the video game narrative. In 2024, she was awarded “Best Student Presentation” at the Inaugural Cognitive Linguistics Association of North America Conference for her work analysing horror immersion’s relationship with the player’s point of view. While taking a break from academia, she has been pursuing careers, positions, and activities within the game industry to learn and experience the praxis of the theories she has researched and posited.
