Exams Under Anaesthesia

“Exams Under Anaesthesia (EUA) Graphics: Equity and Neurodiversity in the Operating Room” is a project undertaken by the UBC Comic Studies Cluster, led by Dr Elizabeth Nijdam, in collaboration with community-based pediatrician Anamaria Richardson, that seeks cartoonists to create short graphic novels based on the experiences of neurodiverse children on their experience in the BC healthcare system.

This project focuses on the often challenging and complex interactions that neurodiverse children, including those with autism, intellectual impairments, and limited verbal capacity, face within medical settings. Specifically, it addresses their experiences with Exams Under Anesthesia (EUA) at BC Children’s Hospital. These procedures, necessary for children with complex behavioural needs, can be traumatic for children, families, and clinicians alike. The EUA process involves using sedation to facilitate necessary medical interventions that might otherwise be extremely difficult.

Applications for the project started on September 1st and the nine artists were notified of their selection on September 5th. Each artist was tasked with creating a short comic of 8-12 pages, drawing from interviews with parents of neurodiverse children. These narratives aim to shed light on the nuanced and often underrepresented experiences of these families, moving beyond traditional academic research methods to make these stories accessible and relatable to a broader audience.

On September 21st, the artists participated in a one-day workshop at BC Children’s Hospital, ongoing conversations with parents, Dr. Richardson, Dr. Nijdam, and keynote speaker Rebecca Burgess, a UK-based freelance comic artist and illustrator living. On Friday, 17th November, the artists completed a review session with Rebecca Burgess, where they received feedback on their in-progress drafts and received clarity on their doubts and questions. Currently, the nine artists have submitted their first drafts, which are currently under review by Dr. Nijdam and Dr. Richardson.

The project not only seeks to increase awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by neurodiverse children in healthcare but also aims to foster empathy and informed practices among healthcare professionals and the general public. The comics, once finalized, will be exhibited at the BC Children’s Hospital in May 2024, offering a powerful and engaging medium for storytelling and advocacy.

As this project progresses, the UBC Comics Studies Cluster and Dr. Anamaria Richardson anticipate that this project will open new pathways for about the power of comics to intervene in discourses in the medical sciences and healthcare system.

“Treading Water” by Katherine Chupik-Hall

August 13, 2025

“Treading Water” has been my attempt at an exploration of disability as something fragmented and complex, such as a reflection in a pool. Water is “August’s” (all names have been changed within this narrative in order to protect the privacy of the family referrened) greatest grounding force, an integral and soothing part of his routine. “Sammy” by Elsbeth Dodman

August 13, 2025

I first met S on a piece of paper. I named her ‘Sammy’ in the comic but I will never know her real name. And that’s okay. Advocacy isn’t just about the person in front of you; it’s about helping to make a better future for the people who come afterwards. I’ve had my own […]

“Box” by Scarlet Wings Kaili

August 13, 2025

The lens which we understand life comes from our own experiences, and the lens which I wear is of a late diagnosed autistic adult who has been failed and traumatized by the medical system multiple times. As I read through the interview, I felt depressed. Having fallen through the gaps in the healthcare system my […]

I feel truly privileged to be here. Mucho gusto. As a mother, I was deeply touched by this […]

“Appointment Day” by Natasha Gauthier

August 13, 2025

I was drawn to this project because my mom spent a large part of her childhood in the BC Children’s Hospital, and I felt called to help turn up the volume on the stories of children and families that are often not heard. My comic is an abstract exploration of the alienation and misunderstandings that […]

“This is my son” by Jonathan Dalton

August 13, 2025

This comic was based as closely as possible on the account of “Thomas’” mother. She spoke passionately about her and her son’s situation, with a mix of specific examples and the philosophy that those anecdotes have developed in her. I took my job as merely the messenger, reformatting her words into a tight narrative essay […]

“Hypothetically” by Eve Solomos

August 13, 2025

Hello! This comic is about what it might feel like to navigate the medical system as a child with complex behaviours or needs. For both the child and the caregivers, it can be anything from frightening to tedious to frustrating to traumatic. I wanted to try and capture that experience through a series of comparisons. […]

“Hospital Day” by Jing-Wen Yuan

August 13, 2025

This narrative comic focuses on a child’s experience of going to the hospital and having to undergo anesthesia. I aimed to capture the child’s perception of feeling as if everyone is against them, when in reality, it is for their benefit. The child is frightened by machines and hospital equipment, and wants to free herself […]
