Join us for Cinematic Roleplay for Climate Justice! (Sept. 5 @ 3PM)

This event marks the pilot of Fictional Narratives, Real Negotiations: Teaching Climate Justice with Cinematic Roleplay—an innovative, story-driven education project co-developed by a UBC alumnus and a current student, with support from the UBC Pop Culture Cluster.

Over the course of three hours, participants will step into character roles, navigate fictional climate conflicts inspired by the Avatar movies, and critically reflect on real-world justice issues.

Beyond testing the module’s format and content, the session also serves as a back-to-school gathering—bringing together students who share interests in sustainability, media, and interdisciplinary learning.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Critically analyze how popular media shapes public understanding of climate justice and inspires real-world advocacy.
  2. Engage in roleplay to explore diverse stakeholder perspectives, demonstrating empathy, communication, and negotiation skills.
  3. Apply interdisciplinary thinking to examine the social, political, and ethical dimensions of climate conflicts and propose systemic solutions.
  4. Build connections with like-minded peers, fostering a supportive learning community that may lead to future collaborations across academic or creative initiatives.
